New favorite hobbies: Almost-but-not-quite crawling. He's got the moves down--and it's really quite hysterical to see him get his little booty in the air and rock it back and forth--but he's still sorta just skotting himself along. He's also trying desperately to say "hi" and is now learning how to clap his hands.
Other likes: Laughing and smiling. He's got to be the smiliest baby out there.
Major dislikes: Honestly, I can't think of anything he isn't happy to do. For that, we're grateful.
Favorite foods: Peas (still), macaroni, but I would have to say his new favorite food is this organic chicken and wild rice. I try to buy him as much organic stuff as possible, but there's really not that much out there, and this chicken and rice concoction is probably his fav.
Least favorite food: Probably carrots still. But there was something he was eating the other day that he made really gross faces with and I just can't remember what it was.
Things he likes to do to drive Dad and especially Mom crazy: Flipping over while getting his diaper changed. We've resorted to giving him a toy while he's getting his diaper changed (and usually it's just one of his shoes--ha), but he still flips over a lot. Not funny when it's a poopie we're cleaning up. Also, really loves to drop his titties behind the crib. The kid has a hoard of titties--no kidding--underneath his crib, and they're all in one neatly formed pile.
Favorite toy: He loves pretty much anything he can stick in his mouth. This morning he took my paper plate and had tons of fun with that. Hopefully he will always have such simple needs.
Favorite musicians: Obviously, he loves Dolly. But we recently discovered that he loves Jack Johnson, too. He loves to dance to music. Brandon is working to get him to listen to Ozzy. Mom has obviously vetoed that--if I made him change out of his Ozzy shirt the day Max was born, does he think I'm gonna let him brainwash my child with that filth after he's born?
Comfort zone: Momma's bosom. Max has taken a real liking to falling asleep in bed between Mom and Dad (see previous post).
Sleeping habits: OK, but not perfect. He generally is asleep between 6-7 pm, and for some reason he has been waking around 10. We are making him cry it out (which I hate, but I know we have to do if he's ever going to sleep on his own), and it takes him a little bit. He is always up by 5-6:30 am. Man, I wish he would sleep in!
Bad habit: He's a belly sleeper. As hard as Brandon and I tried to make him sleep on his back, and he did for a very long time (hence the reason he has a flat head), Max has discovered that he likes to sleep on his belly. There's no stopping him now, so I am even more paranoid about him sleeping now.
Bath time: He seems to enjoy it more, especially now that he can sit up in the tub and play with his toys. Not as tortuous experience as it used to be.
Btoh Brandon and I are completely amazed at how fast these 8 months have gone by. It seems like just yesterday I was walking 90 minutes a day to get him out (!!!) and then was surprised at my 2 am water breaking, but it also seems like forever ago. And both of us never cease to be amazed by how much we grow to love Max more and more each day.

Houston, I think we have a problem
Max fell asleep in bed with me the other day. It was completely unexpected--he was messing around and laughing and then all of a sudden he falls asleep in my arms and took a 40 minute nap. Brandon and I both thought it was soooooooooooooo cute.
Sooooooooooooooooo wrong.
Kinda reminds me of when we first got Shelley. The very first night we got her, Shelley hopped up in bed with us and we just thought it was the sweetest thing that this formerly abused dog (she used to submit and put her head down any time we tried to pet her) wanted to cuddle with us in bed.
It's been almost 6 years since that first night with Shelley, and she hasn't left the bed yet.
So anyway, Max might be getting ready to pull a Shelley. He's had a couple of naps in bed with us since that first one, and I am afraid it is starting to become a habit. A bad habit.
But he just looks so cute when he cuddles next to me!!!!!!!!!!!!

Max's First Vote!
Today Max was a super big helper. He accompanied me to the voting precinct and helped me cast our vote for...................................
Hillary.
I mean, Max is a ladies man, and he's got a thing for, well, let's just say it rhymes with "kitties." He even beats his friend Brendan if Brendan gets a little too close to his "kitty." So Max decided (and I approved) that since Hillary is a lady and has some kitties that we should vote for her.
The end.

Max and Mom's First Snow Day!
School was cancelled today because we got lots of snow (8.5 inches), and so I got to stay home with The Max.
It was actually quite uneventful. Max napped for 3 hours--lazy butt--and I did some online activities for my students, cleaned a bit, and watched tv. We didn't go anywhere because I have no idea where my car is under all that snow, and I really don't want to have to tote a 7 month old out in -879387592 degree weather and over half a foot of snow.
But still, it was nice. Really wish I could do it more.

Max's personality
Max will officially be 7 months old in 2 days, and his personality is starting to show; it's definitely quite easy to tell what sort of baby he is.
So..................what sort of baby is The Max? What is The Max's personality?
Mom's answer: The first word that comes to mind is peaceful. Max is definitely a fairly easygoing kid. Yeah, he definitely had a fussy period around 1-2 months old, but since then, he has really developed into a very even-tempered baby. He rarely fusses, and is pretty content to just sit and chillax (but not for too long because he's got "important" things to do, or so he thinks). He's also a very happy baby. Sometimes this does not show in the pictures because he gets mesmerized by the camera and stops smiling, but he really is a very happy and giggly baby. I would also say he is very inquisitive and curious; he loves to examine things thoroughly and tries very hard to get to things not in his reach so that he can examine them (and then put them in his mouth). I cannot count the number of times complete strangers have walked up to me or Brandon and commented on how "alert" and "observant" Max is. Finally, I would also say that Max is very eager to please. It's so cute to see him playing with a toy and then look up and smile at me in such a way as to say, "See what I'm doing, Mommy!"
Obviously he is young now and his personality will continue to grow and change. I do hope he keeps Brandon's calmness and peacefulness; that's definitely something that makes being a mom to the Max fairly easy. I wonder if he'll get my sarcastic sense of humor. Hmmmm....what do I want him to get of my personality, you ask? I'm not sure, but if I had to say, I hope he will get my sense of love and care for all creatures. I know it sounds cheesey, but I hope he'll be like his momma and pick up an injured butterfly and place the butterfly somewhere peaceful and quiet and safe to rest. I hope he'll reach down and place the caterpillar off of the sidewalk. Cheesey, I know, but it's the way I am.
Dad's answer: Dad pretty much agrees with Mom. Max is definitely easy-going, and rarely fusses. When he does, it's usually pretty fake, and doesn't take much to make his short cries turn into laughs. So, then, does that make him bipolar?
He is also very inquisitive. I've never seen a baby that likes to examine things as much as Max does. He was doing it from the day he was born. I hope he continues to be as inquisitive as he is. It makes for a kid that likes to learn, and I really hope Max loves to learn.
All in all, Max is just a good, happy, easy-going, curious kid.

And the best dog goes to..............
Pippi.
Believe it or not.
We have been sitting here in the bedroom letting Max play with the Pips. He's been pulling toenails, tail, paws, legs, ears, you name it, and Pippi just licks him. So far, she is the dog I trust the most with Mr. Max.
We trust all 3 dogs completely. When Max was first born, we were a little afraid of Shelley's possible reaction since she is still adjusting to the fact that the earth revolves around the sun, not around her. I think we were over-paranoid, though, because all 3 dogs have been nothing but loving. None of them have shown any signs of aggression.
But Pips is definitely the best around him (but again, that doesn't mean the other 2 are not good around him because they are). She's actually funny because she just sits and watches Max while he messes with her and then she licks him.

Jennifer's rant about Brandon
Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo..........................................
I've been really wanting SMORES, right? So, I send IT to the store to get me some chocolate chips and giant marshmallows (cuz I don't like the small ones) since we already had graham crackers.
Well, IT comes back with Dove's chocolates instead of chocolate chips. Since I'm a nice person and all, I thanked him despite his incompetency as a husband and tried my best at making smores with the chocolates.
Honey, it just ain't working.
I put 3 chocolates on a graham cracker and nuked it. I burned the cracker, the chocolates, and both paper plates (I like to double up). I then tried to nuke the chocolates in a ceramic mug and that didn't work, either. What I did end up doing, though, was getting chocolate all over my face and hands, so much that I look like I have shigellosis.
It is my hope that Max knows that when a woman says she wants chocolate chips to make smores that he knows he better get chocolate chips and nothing else.
Apparently IT has something to add (IT has been hovering over my shoulder watching me type THIS):
SHE sent me to Walgreens, not the store. Walgreens had no chocolate chips. I improvised. Is it my fault that SHE cannot properly melt Dove chocolates? How long did you nuke them for? 2 minutes?

Max: A Meanie, A Crazy, and A Big Scaredy Cat
A Meanie: So, Max was at his sitter's yesterday and he and his little buddy Brendan were just chilling together. Anyway, Max had his titty out and was playing with it, and I guess Brendan thought it looked fun, so he tried to get the titty. Max did not approve and swatted his hand away several times and put the titty back in his own mouth. When we found out about this, we had to have a talk with Max not only about playing nice, but also about the fact that Brendan is currently twice his size and will always remain so and that Max will always be the short and smaller one. If Max is smart, he'll make Brendan his BFF so that way he has someone to watch his back, if ya know what I mean.
A Crazy: For some reason, Max thinks his saucer is a jumparoo. The kid is going CRAZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZY in his saucer, jumping up and down and laughing ALL the time. It scares me. We thought about getting him a jumparoo, but those things hold only up to 25 pounds, and considering Max is already 67, he's a little too big.
A Big Scaredy Cat: 3 hours. Crying. Wailing. Sobbing mercilessly. Stranger. Danger.

Max and Mom's Professional Goal
soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.................................
Max and I have rekindled our love affair with Dolly.
Dolly Parton.
We've been listening to her all day, dancing to her tunes "9-5," and "Why'd You Come in Here Looking Like That" while wearing feather boas.
Our new goal: We intend to make a music video to those 2 Dolly songs this summer.
Be on the look-out.

Max's first Thanksgiving and Mom's gratitude
Yesterday, Brandon, Max, and I went power shopping for about 4 hours. Brandon and I had intended to buy ourselves something fun--neither one of us can recall when we bought something for ourselves--but of course we ended up just buying stuff for Max. Max got 4 books, 2 sets of blocks, the little hoop thing, a sweatshirt, and the Laughing Puppy.
One of the books Max got was called "On the Day You Were Born." I decided to read it to Max last night (we read a book every day--I really think Max will love to read because he seriously acts like he loves it. He holds the book with me, stares at the pictures, and smiles at me as I read.)
I ended up crying.
I know it's just a kid's book, but it really is such a powerful read. It's about all the love for a baby and how the world was just waiting for the baby to come.
After I read it, I wiped away the tears (of joy), I began feeding Max and rocking him to sleep. As I rocked him, I thought about just how much I love him, and how grateful I am to have him in my life.
I know it sounds so cheesey, but I feel like a better person because of Max. To an extent, I feel like a different person because of him. I never really thought that there was anything different between mothers and non-mothers, but there really is. I don't think someone who is not a mother can understand just how much love I have. And I'm not trying to belittle adoptive mothers or c-section mommies, but it just seems like the act of delivery itself is such a powerful moment, and my body and heart has been forever changed because of it. It's not just the physical and biological changes that have made me different, but I honestly feel like my heart and soul and spirit have changed. It's almost like I don't know if a non-mommy could ever really connect with me or understand me. I am so different now.
I love my Max. And I am grateful for my Max.
I loved holding him that very first time. I was so tired, so thirsty, so emotionally and physically drained. And even though my stomach was empty, my heart became so full of love for him.
I have loved watching him grow from a tiny little squirt to a miniature person.
I love holding him really tight against my chest and watching him sleep, his eyes closed and his little heart pounding very quietly in his chest.
I love reading to him. I hope he loves to read just like I do.
I love playing with him.
I live to see him smile, and there is no greater joy in my heart than hearing him laugh. My day has not been made until I see that little grin and hear that sweet little giggle.
Max has really made me learn to love more. And love better. I sincerely feel I am a better teacher because of him; I see each of my students now as some momma's baby, and I want to give that momma's baby the best because I know I want my own baby to have the best.
Happy first Thanksgiving, little buddy. Your momma loves you.

I know he's spoiled.
I realize I have a problem. I know I am spoiling him.
But I cannot stop.
I might need counseling.

Man, my parents are suckers
Word up, ladies. This is Max. I just wanted to let you know that if you ever need anything, let me know and I'll hook you up. Seriously. If I tell my parents I want something, or even indicate that I would remotely enjoy something, they run out and get it for me.
They bought me a multi-million dollar exersaucer last night. It was the most expensive saucer on the block. Since Mom's the sucker in the family, she was telling my Pops that I really needed it, and that it would flatter my hair and eyes. She wouldn't even let him look at the saucers that didn't at least cost triple digits.
Sucker.
So, let me know what you need, and Mr. Max can make it happen.
Love,
Mr. Max
Love,
Mr. Max

Max is actually a pretty good kid
(Yes, mother, I know I have not posted anything substantial in quite a while. Fact is, I've been busy. Grades were due at the end of October, and then we had parent-teacher conferences last week. I actually had a couple of parents ask me how I do it all--being a new mother, a teacher at 2 schools, and still manage to do as much with the Latin Club as I do. I really don't know how. Sometimes I wonder if I am just skating by and doing everything just mediocre. I hope not.)
**********************************************************************
Despite his many areas needing improvement (which include SLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP--his sleeping habits are terrible--his constant drooling, poor table manners, lack of interest in learning algebra and Latin, his inability to clean up after himself and earn his keep in the house, etc.), Max is actually a pretty good kid.
I would even go so far as to say that I kinda like him.
Heck, I think I love him.
He's actually quite the friendly little booger. He's peaceful and patient (he got that from Brandon)--I took him with me to school yesterday, and he managed to stay there and entertain himself and also put up with all the idiots wanting to see him and gawk at him, and he did not throw a single BF.
He's gonna be smart. With me as his mother and Brandon as his father, he has to be. I know it's really early, but I think I can already see his intelligence starting to poke through. He's constantly observing things; he likes to walk around with me throughout the house--he sits on my hip now so he can face forward--and he just watches very peacefully everything I do. When I get a glass of water, he watches me open the cupboard, get the glass, turn on the faucet, fill the glass, and then he watches as I drink it. It's actually fun to watch him watch me.
He's always happy. I love listening to him laugh. He has so many different laughs--squeals, giggles, and full-blown rolling-on-the-floor laughs.
And he makes me happy. I'm pretty sure I smile more with Max around. In fact, at parent-teacher conferences, another parent was asking how I manage being a new mom and teaching, and I said that I am just really happy with where I am now. He replied, "You look it--I can tell."
I am happy. Never been happier.
The past two days have been really nice because it has just been me and Max. He's so different from the way he was during the summer (when he was just born) when it was just me and him--I don't know if it sounds bad to say this or not, but I enjoy my time with him more now than I did. I think it's because he has so much personality now. He's such a little person, and it's so much more fun--and certainly more rewarding--being with him.
I think he loves me, too.
